Cooking While Camping

There are many ways to cook while you are camping. If you want to make cooking simple and quick, you can plan it into the day’s activity. Many campers want to enjoy the process of cooking outdoors and therefore want it to last for hours. There are various methods to accomplish this, but no matter which way you choose, all camp food should taste good.

Dutch oven cooking is very popular for camping. The design of the Dutch oven hasn't changed much in the several hundred years it has been in this country. The Dutch oven can be used as an oven, pot, stove, frying pan, roaster, or even a kettle. It doesn't take a lot of coals and can be used almost anywhere. With the Dutch oven, you can sit its little legs on top of coals with the food inside and coals on the lid, if needed. The food inside will simmer and cook, letting off an aroma that makes your mouth water. Dutch oven cooking has been used since colonization of America began. The Western cowboys carried them on their chuck wagons and they were used to cook their meals.

There are other ways to cook while camping. You can build wood fires that carry the true camp atmosphere and act as the gathering place with warmth and romance. With the campfire, you can cook by using heavy duty aluminum foil to cover meat and vegetables and letting them cook in the coals. There are camp stoves and charcoal BBQ grills. Many fun experiences can be had while cooking at a campsite.
